Recommendation: The Finance Committee and Staff recommend that the Board of Supervisors approve Zoning’s request to apply for the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund Grant Program.
Summary: The Chesapeake Bay Restoration Advisory Committee is accepting grant applications to conduct Chesapeake Bay-related education and restoration activities. The grants are funded through the sale of the special Chesapeake Bay license plate, “Friend of the Chesapeake.” In FY 2019, $310,882 in grant funds will be awarded to eligible applicants. The grantor is seeking proposals that emphasize environmental education, in order to increase public awareness and knowledge about the Bay, as well as projects of a restoration and conservation nature that should be action-oriented.

These funds would be used to $10,000.00 for design, travel, personnel, supplies, and verification by VA-Tech Cooperative Extension and Civil Engineering department, and $10,000.00 to evaluate plan by consultant, consultant travel, supplies, and submit to the Corp and DEQ for permits.

Consequence of Denial/Inaction:

Failure to apply for this grant opportunity will mean that the Zoning will miss the opportunity to request state funding from the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund that would assist in the large undertaking of creating Virginia’s first freshwater mussel farm and relocation project as well as providing educational outreach efforts.
