Recommendation: The Sheriff and staff recommend that the Board of Supervisors accept the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG), Naloxone for Law Enforcement Agencies sub-award and associated budget adjustment and appropriation.
Summary:

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office is working to prevent brain injuries and deaths as a result of overdoses caused by opioids which include prescription painkillers and street drugs.  In accordance with the Code of Virginia §54.1-3408, the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office implemented a law enforcement program for the use of naloxone nasal spray to a person who is believed to be experiencing or about to experience a life-threatening opiate overdose. The implementation of naloxone nasal spray in the event of overdose was initiated through the FY 2017 DCJS JAG Naloxone for Law Enforcement Agencies grant award. For FY 2019 the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office was awarded $5,000 in federal funds to continue the naloxone program.

There is no local match requirement and no requirement to continue to fund the program after the award expires on September 30, 2019.
