Agenda Title:
Public Hearing for the Grant Application Request for the Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) 2019 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program – Local Solicitation
Recommendation:
N/A
Summary:

The JAG – Local Solicitation program allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions.  The grant application requires a 30-day governing body review.  In addition to the governing body review, the grant guidelines stipulate that the public be notified of the grant application as well as be provided with an opportunity to comment on the application.  Staff will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 in order to allow citizens to provide their comments.

Spotsylvania County is eligible to receive $28,196. The Sheriff’s Office would like to utilize this funding towards the purchase of an automatic target system for firearms training.  Although the grant program does not require a local match, the cost of the equipment will exceed the available grant funds.  The Sheriff’s Office will make up the additional costs of $30,050 through use of their FY 2020 Adopted Budget, asset forfeitures funds, additional non-federal grants or a combination of these funding sources.  The grant does not allow for supplanting of local funds.

A copy of the grant application will be on file in the Finance Department at 8800 Courthouse Road, and may be examined Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. starting on August 26, 2019. In addition to the public hearing, public comments will be accepted from August 26, 2019, through September 25, 2019.  For those with special needs, please notify the Finance Department of any accommodations you may require at least five days before the meeting.
